Trim hedges trees and foliage away from windows and doors to prevent obvious hiding places for intruders.
Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.
Ask for identification from repair and service representatives.
Install peepholes in all exterior doors to identify whoever is outside.
Change your answering machine message so that it doesn't indicate you are not @ home.
Permanently mark your valuables in your household. Keep pictures and records of all marked objects in a safe place.
Turn outside lights on after dark near doors, on porches, and in your yard. (Motion lights are also suggested by this office CRES)
Be careful where you leave your spare keys. Intruders check window ledges and under flowerpots, welcome mats, etc.
Team up with neighbors to form a crime watch program.
If you are going away for an extended period
of time, remember to: Use timer for lights, television, and sound
systems to give your home a "lived-in" look while you
are away: stop mail & paper delivery: Alert neighbors to watch
your home: Leave a vehicle in the driveway: Have someone mow &
rake your lawn-shovel snow.
